Armchair Galáctico · 2026–27 Premier League
Sep 18 – Sep 21, 2026 · 10 Matches · 8-Goal Etihad Thriller · The Last Game Before The Break
Matchweek 5 was the last one before the international break — and it served as a genuine verdict on the early season. Arsenal's perfect start came to a jarring, emphatic end at the Amex. Brighton were relentless, precise, and ruthless. Pascal Gross thundered in from outside the box before half-time. Brighton are already third — and have now beaten the defending champions in the first five matchweeks. This was not a fluke.
Man City are top of the Premier League with 15 points from five games — a perfect start. The 5–3 against Sunderland at the Etihad was a genuine spectacle. Brian Brobbey scored three times for the visitors and still ended up on the losing side. Rayan Cherki — City's mercurial maverick — put in the kind of performance that made Etihad fans forget the summer entirely. Haaland scored. Enzo Fernandez scored. City's attacking depth is simply extraordinary. battleSTAR Galáctico: Rayan Cherki — a 29th-minute goal and electric from first to last whistle, the best individual performer in a very busy matchweek.
And then there was the Friday night opener that nobody quite saw coming. Brentford hosted Chelsea at the Gtech Community Stadium and won 3–0. Jaidon Anthony broke the deadlock in the 61st minute with a composed finish. Igor Thiago made it two in the 83rd. Fabio Carvalho wrapped it up in stoppage time. Xabi Alonso's Chelsea — for all their summer investment — were utterly dismantled on a Friday night by a Brentford side that simply wanted it more. The Couch picked this one correctly, for the record. battleSTAR Galáctico: Jaidon Anthony — the 61st-minute goal that opened the floodgates and set the tone for a dominant Brentford performance.
Tottenham's goalless run ended — in the worst possible way. Villa had already put three past them before Gallagher and van Hecke scored two late consolations. The drought lasted 447 Premier League minutes in the end. And when it finally broke, it didn't even matter. De Zerbi's system hasn't translated into results, and Spurs going into the international break on two points — level with Fulham at the bottom — is a damning reflection of the season so far. Emiliano Buendía's 79th-minute strike, sealing the 3–2 away win, was Villa's first Premier League victory of the season. After four draws, they look capable of much more. battleSTAR Galáctico: Emiliano Buendía — decisive third goal, composed, clinical, made the game safe at the most important moment.
Alexander Isak's 57th-minute finish settled the Andoni Iraola Derby at the Vitality Stadium. Liverpool's new manager beat his old club. Bournemouth pushed, pressed, created chances — but Alisson was excellent and Isak was clinical when his moment came. Liverpool go into the break on 9 points, in the thick of the top-six conversation. Marco Rose's Bournemouth remain without a win in five — three points, 17th place. The gap between promise and results is growing. battleSTAR Galáctico: Alexander Isak — a poised, ice-cool finish that settled the most loaded rivalry of the matchweek.
Finally, the Sunday night special at Craven Cottage. Fulham led, controlled large passages of play, and thoroughly deserved all three points. Then Matheus Cunha came off the bench in the 89th minute and stabbed home from close range to rescue a draw for Manchester United. The Cottage erupted in fury. United somehow avoided a third straight Premier League defeat. Carrick's side are 12th with five points — not yet in crisis, but worryingly short of convincing. Fulham, meanwhile, remain on 2 points and are still winless in five. They were the better team. It doesn't show in the table. battleSTAR Galáctico: Matheus Cunha — dramatic, ruthless, and completely characteristic. Rescued a point when United needed it most.
Five from ten. The Couch predicted the Brentford upset, the Everton and Newcastle wins, the City victory, and the Fulham draw. He got Bournemouth wrong, Arsenal wrong, Spurs wrong, Forest wrong, and Leeds wrong. Five from ten is an improvement. He simply lacks recent accuracy. The international break gives the Couch two weeks to develop a coherent theory about why he keeps picking against Brighton. Expect a full statement in due course.
The biggest story outside the Big Six? Coventry beating Nottingham Forest — the shock result of the matchweek by some distance. Everton continued their strong start. Newcastle ended Hull's unbeaten run. And Leeds were held to a goalless draw at Elland Road by Crystal Palace, a result that will frustrate Daniel Farke considerably going into the international break.
