This was billed as one last chapter for Belgium's golden generation — Kevin De Bruyne, 34 and almost certainly playing his final World Cup, leading a squad that reached a semifinal in 2018 and has gone home early every tournament since. For long stretches in Seattle, it looked like the chapter would open badly.

Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead with a superb 19th-minute strike from distance, and Mohamed Salah's side — making their long-awaited World Cup return with Salah and Manchester City's Omar Marmoush leading the line — looked entirely capable of holding on. Egypt were organised, combative, and unwilling to be the supporting cast in someone else's farewell tour.

Belgium needed a spark, and they got one from the bench. Romelu Lukaku was on the pitch for just 22 seconds before his presence told: Thomas Meunier's cross found him, and the resulting pressure forced Mohamed Hany into an own goal in the 66th minute. It was enough to deny Egypt a historic first World Cup win, but no more than that — Belgium couldn't find a second, and a thoroughly creditable point goes to Egypt.

De Bruyne's farewell chapter remains open, neither closed honourably nor in triumph — just a draw, and a reminder that this Egypt side is a far tougher proposition than the romantic underdog narrative might suggest.

1. Lukaku's Impact Is Still Instant

22 seconds. That's all it took. Whatever questions remain about a 60-minute Lukaku, the super-sub version remains lethal.

2. Egypt Are Not Here to Make Up the Numbers

Salah, Marmoush, and a well-organised Ashour-led midfield made this anything but a foregone conclusion. A first World Cup win was agonisingly close.

3. The Couch Got the Shape Right, Not the Script

Predicted Belgium 2-1. Got Belgium 1-1 — the one-goal margin and Egypt's single goal both landed, but the couch had Belgium winning, not drawing. Close, but not quite.
