Match Report

This was supposed to be a formality. Spain, the reigning European champions, against Cape Verde — population just over 500,000, making their first-ever World Cup appearance against one of the tournament favourites. Instead, it produced one of the great defensive performances this World Cup will see, and arguably its first genuine shock.

Spain had 27 shots. Twenty-seven. Only seven found the target, and not one of them found the net. Vozinha, Cape Verde's 40-year-old goalkeeper, was the reason. He produced a string of brilliant late-first-half stops to deny Mikel Oyarzabal and Aymeric Laporte, and watched Ferran Torres crash a shot off the crossbar on Spain's clearest chance of the match. He finished with seven saves — since 1966, only Pat Jennings, at 41, has made more in a single World Cup match (10, for Northern Ireland against Brazil in 1986).

Cape Verde, for their part, defended with extraordinary discipline and organisation for ninety-plus minutes, absorbing wave after wave of Spanish pressure without ever looking truly rattled. They managed six shots of their own and never threatened to find a way through La Roja's defence either — but they didn't need to. A point against the 2010 World Cup winners, on debut, is a result the entire nation of Cape Verde will remember forever.

For Spain, this is now a problem. The control was total. The cutting edge simply wasn't there, and they'll need to find it quickly against tougher opposition still to come in this group.

3. The Couch Gets Benched — Hard

Predicted Spain 3-0. Got Spain 0-0. Not just wrong on the margin — wrong on whether Spain would score at all. This is the single biggest miss of Matchday 1.
