The Best Third-Placed Teams
Twelve third-placed teams, one cruel spreadsheet. FIFA's rule: rank all twelve by points, then goal difference, then goals scored, and take the best eight. Seven sides on four points qualified automatically. The eighth and final spot came down to a coin-flip-thin margin between Senegal and Iran โ both on three points, both with relatively modest groups โ and Senegal's +2 goal difference, built almost entirely off that 5โ0 demolition of Iraq, won it.

Iran drew all three group games, finished on a goal difference of exactly zero, and still went home. Senegal won one and lost two, finished on three points, and goes through. The lesson, as always: it was never about how many games you won. It's about whether you had one really, really good night against Iraq.
03
The Biggest Storylines
Three matchdays produced more plot than most full tournaments. Here's the group stage's six defining storylines, in no particular order except the one that makes the best paragraph.
๐ซ๐ท Dembรฉlรฉ's Coronation
A record-setting hat-trick against Norway in 32 minutes โ scored with his manager 4,000 miles away at his own mother's funeral โ capped a group stage in which Ousmane Dembรฉlรฉ looked, at times, unplayable.
๐ฟ๐ฆ ๐จ๐ป The Debutants Wrote the Best Stories
South Africa reached a Round of 32 for the first time ever. Cape Verde โ population under 600,000 โ got there without winning a single match. Haiti and Uzbekistan went home, but not before scoring goals that outlived their group-stage exits.
๐ฉ๐ช The Favorites Wobbled
Germany lost to Ecuador with the group already won. Argentina won most of their group without needing Messi to start. Spain were flawless. Brazil shared top spot. Nobody's invincible, and almost everybody's vulnerable on the right Tuesday.
๐ Six World Cups, One Ochoa
Guillermo Ochoa's 77th-minute cameo against Czechia made him just the third men's player ever, alongside Messi and Ronaldo, to appear at six different World Cups โ a 40-year-old goalkeeper outlasting entire playing generations.
๐งฎ Goal Difference Ran the Tournament
Australia over Paraguay, Belgium over Egypt, Senegal over Iran, Brazil over Morocco โ four separate groups decided by goal difference alone. The real protagonist of the group stage wore a spreadsheet, not a jersey.
๐๏ธ The Couch Got Better Every Week
Matchday 1: a coin flip. Matchday 2: 16โ8. Matchday 3: 18โ6, the best mark of the group stage. Progress โ with one specific, deeply embarrassing exception. Keep scrolling.
04
What I Got Wrong
An 18โ6 final matchday is something to be proud of. It does not erase the fact that, across 72 matches, the Couch authored some genuinely spectacular misses โ predicted reversals, phantom goalscorers, and at least one "right scoreline, wrong absolutely everyone on the pitch" special. Here's the short version.
๐ฅง The Couch Eats Humble Pie
Right Score, Wrong Everyone: A Group Stage Confession
The single most representative moment of the Couch's group stage didn't come from a missed winner or a phantom red card โ it came from Match 072, Croatia 2โ1 Ghana, where the predicted final score landed exactly right and every single name on the scoresheet was wrong. That's the headline entry in a much longer rap sheet that also includes Germany's predicted "comfortable cruise" turning into a defeat to Ecuador, Messi starting a match he never started, and a predicted Uruguay rout of Cape Verde that turned into a 2โ2 thriller with none of the called storylines showing up.
The full, ranked, self-deprecating accounting of every prediction miss across all 72 group stage matches โ including a tier list, and the Couch's official plea for leniency โ lives on its own page.
Thirty-two teams, sixteen matches, no more group-stage safety net. Here's the bracket as it stands heading into the knockouts.

Correction: an earlier version of this bracket was the Couch's own reconstruction and got the seeding pairings wrong. It's been rebuilt from FIFA's official Round of 32 draw and cross-checked match by match โ these sixteen pairings are the real bracket, not a best guess.
06
Three Things The Group Stage Taught Us
01 โ DEPTH
Squad Depth Decided More Than Star Power
England rotated and still beat Panama by two. Argentina won a group stage without needing Messi to start most games. The teams who could afford to rest their best players without losing results are the ones who look most dangerous heading into the knockouts.
02 โ UNDERDOGS
This Tournament Rewards Nerve, Not Just Talent
Cape Verde reached the knockouts without a win. South Africa made history with one goal. Bosnia, Paraguay, Ghana, and DR Congo all found a way through despite modest squads on paper. The 48-team format has room for stories the old 32-team version never had.
03 โ MARGINS
The Smallest Numbers Decided the Biggest Outcomes
Four groups were decided by goal difference. The best-third-place cutoff came down to +2 versus 0. If you want to understand this group stage, don't study the goals โ study the goals conceded, because that's what actually broke the ties.
๐๏ธ What's Next
Group Stage: Closed. Knockouts: Loading.
The teams have been sorted, the brackets are set, and the Couch has a full prediction record to defend โ or, in one specific case, atone for. From here: a fresh post-group-stage Power Ranking for all 32 survivors, the full "What I Got Wrong" confession, and a knockout-stage preview building toward a Final the Couch has very strong, very public opinions about.
