Manchester United vs Ipswich Town

A hat-trick for Bruno Fernandes. A five-goal romp at Old Trafford. And buried in the middle of it all — the rather inconvenient fact that Manchester United had to come from behind to produce it.

Ipswich scored first. Liam Davis put the visitors ahead in the 29th minute, and Old Trafford went a shade quieter than it likes to be. United looked nervous, disorganised, and slightly panicked by a visiting side playing without fear. For a period, the Theatre of Dreams was quiet in a way it really did not want to be.

Bruno Fernandes equalised before the break. After an unfortunate slip by an Ipswich Town defender, Cunha got the ball and slipped it through to Bruno, who calmly finished it — the captain showed up when United needed him most. 1–1 at half-time, and United had their mojo back. They had flipped the switch.

The second half was all United. Jacob Greaves put the ball into his own net in the 56th minute to put United ahead, and within five minutes Fernandes converted from the penalty spot to make it 3–1. His hat-trick goal came in the 68th — a clinical angled drive — and Bryan Mbeumo wrapped it up with a goal of his own in the 82nd. Chuba Akpom pulled one back for Ipswich in stoppage time, but it was cosmetic.

Final score 5–2. The result looks commanding. But United went behind at home to Ipswich, and the first 30 minutes were unconvincing. They have the quality to recover and win big — but those early-season nerves are worth noting.
