The group stage ended on a knife's edge in Match 072. The knockouts decided to open the exact same way. Two nations who had never played a single World Cup knockout match in their history walked into SoFi Stadium, and for 91 minutes neither blinked — until Stephen Eustáquio made sure co-host Canada wouldn't have to find out what extra time felt like.
For most of the night, this was a story about subplots rather than goals. Canada's bench held the tournament's longest-running mystery box: captain Alphonso Davies, who hadn't played a single minute of the group stage while recovering from a hamstring injury, yet had been deployed all tournament as what manager Jesse Marsch openly admitted was a decoy — a fitness rumor opponents had to game-plan for, real or not. South Africa, playing their own first-ever World Cup knockout match, spent the first half doing the harder work of actually trying to win it: Derek Cornelius headed a 21st-minute free kick inches past a flying Ronwen Williams, Tani Oluwaseyi twice threatened in a frantic six-yard scramble, and Canada had a penalty shout waved off by referee João Pinheiro before the break, with VAR declining to intervene. South Africa's lone shot on target of the entire match came and went in the 6th minute. 0-0 at half, on merit.
The breakthrough, when it finally arrived, owed as much to misfortune as to magic. Deep into second-half stoppage time, Jacob Shaffelburg's cross from the right was only half-cleared by Ime Okon, and the loose ball dropped straight to Eustáquio, who took a touch and drove it low into the bottom-left corner. SoFi Stadium detonated. Ronwen Williams, who had been excellent all night, could only watch it go in.
Canada becomes the first team in this tournament's Round of 32 to win, and does so in a way the Armchair Galáctico cannot help but admire: the decoy never had to play the hero, because somebody else quietly did. Bafana Bafana go home, but not before becoming the first South African side ever to contest a World Cup knockout match — a milestone worth more than the scoreline suggests. Canada now turns to Houston on July 4, where the winner of Netherlands vs. Morocco awaits in the Round of 16.
Marsch spent the entire group stage using an injured Davies as a psychological prop, daring opponents to plan for a captain who couldn't play. In the Round of 32, the bluff became real: Davies made his actual tournament debut off the bench. He didn't need to score for the storyline to land.
Lead-free, goalless, decided in the dying seconds — Match 073 played out like a direct sequel to Match 072. If this is the template for the next fifteen Round of 32 games, nobody should plan on leaving early.
A first-ever World Cup appearance, a first-ever group-stage escape, and now a first-ever knockout match — contested all the way to the 92nd minute. Bafana Bafana were one bounce of the ball away from extra time in their own history-making run.
Canada advance to the Round of 16 for the first time in the nation's history, where they'll face the winner of Netherlands vs. Morocco (Round of 32, June 30) on July 4 in Houston. South Africa are eliminated — but leave having contested the first World Cup knockout match in the country's history.
Match 073 was the opening fixture of a 16-match Round of 32 running through July 3. See the complete bracket for the other 15 first-knockout-round pairings.
