🇺🇸
USA
Coach: Mauricio Pochettino · Group D

The United States are co-hosting this tournament and playing in Seattle with 70,000 screaming fans who believe — genuinely believe — this is the squad that can deliver a deep run. Mauricio Pochettino's appointment turned heads globally; a manager who took Tottenham and Chelsea to Champions League finals is now managing the national team of a country that hosted the tournament as a statement of intent.

Christian Pulisic — fit, 84 caps, carrying the weight of American football expectation with apparent ease — leads the attack from the left. Gio Reyna is back in the squad after his turbulent Qatar 2022 experience. Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, and Yunus Musah form a midfield that would start for most top-12 nations. The USA are ready. The only question is if the team is as good as the talent suggests.

⚠ Gio Reyna — Fresh StartBack in the squad after the fallout from Qatar 2022 (limited minutes, Berhalter's public comments on his attitude). Pochettino has reset the relationship. If Reyna is fully motivated, he's one of the most technically gifted Americans in a generation.

Australia
Coach: Tony Popovic · Group D

The Socceroos made the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — stunning Denmark in the round of 16, defeating France's second-string (actually France's first-choice lineup) in the quarters before falling to Argentina. They arrive knowing how to compete at this level. Mathew Ryan (Real Sociedad, fourth World Cup) is the veteran backbone in goal.

Mitchell Duke leads the forward line. Cameron Burgess is the defensive anchor. Australia will sit compact and try to hit on the break — Tony Popovic's system is built around organisation and transition. Playing against the USA at their home tournament in a packed Lumen Field is an enormous ask, but Australia know how to compete with top teams.

Christian Pulisic
USA · Forward / Captain
AC Milan. 84 caps. Fully fit. The most technically polished player the USA has ever produced in the modern era — Premier League winner (Chelsea), Serie A regular. If the USMNT has a breakthrough tournament, Pulisic's name will be in the headlines every round.
Mathew Ryan
Australia · Goalkeeper
Real Sociedad. Fourth World Cup. One of the best keepers outside of the top-tier nations. He kept Australia in games in Qatar that should have been done by half-time. If the USA score early, Ryan will be the one keeping it interesting.

Take 01
Pochettino managed to get Gio Reyna back in the squad without it becoming a diplomatic incident — after the public fallout from Qatar 2022, that alone is a coaching achievement. Reyna at his best is the sort of player who wins matches in the 83rd minute with an impossible first touch. If he plays well here, the USA's ceiling moves up significantly.
Take 02
Australia making the 2022 quarter-finals is the best result in Socceroos history and the squad carries that confidence. They are not intimidated by this stage or this opponent. Popovic will set them up to be extremely difficult to break down and to spring quick transitions that expose the American high defensive line. The USA will need to be patient.
Take 03
Lumen Field in Seattle is one of the loudest outdoor venues in North American sport — the 12th Man culture is real. 69,000 screaming USMNT fans in the drizzle of June Seattle is going to create an atmosphere that makes this feel like a different match than it would be on a neutral ground. Australia will need earplugs and nerves of tungsten.

USA win with controlled authority. Pulisic and Reyna combine for something memorable, Pochettino's system clicks early, and Australia fight hard but ultimately can't cope with the quality and the crowd noise combined. USA 2–0 Australia. Group D opens with a clear statement of intent.
