🇨🇿
Czechia
Coach: Miroslav Koubek · Group A

Czechia arrive as the most organised side in Group A — a team built around Tomáš Souček's engine in midfield and Patrik Schick's hold-up play and finishing at centre-forward. Souček captains this squad with characteristic quiet authority. Schick, who lit up Euro 2020 with a stunning goal from the halfway line, is the focal threat.

Ladislav Krejčí anchors the defence. Adam Hlozek recovered from injury to make the squad. This is a technically proficient, disciplined Czech side that won't blow anyone away but will grind out results — and they'll be well-drilled for this opener against an African side they'll be expected to beat.

⚠ Hlozek WatchHlozek recovered from injury just in time to make the preliminary squad. Koubek may ease him in gradually — but his pace off the bench is a genuine weapon against tiring defences.

Coach: Hugo Broos · Group A

Bafana Bafana's squad is a fascinating mix of the familiar and the unexpected. Nine Orlando Pirates players, nine Mamelodi Sundowns players — Hugo Broos has doubled down on domestic cohesion rather than chasing diaspora talent. It's a bold call. The defensive unit is extremely well-drilled.

Percy Tau is the creative spark — Belgium-based for years, he's the player Czechia will fear most. Lyle Foster (Burnley) and Relebohile Mofokeng (Orlando Pirates) provide pace in attack. Ronwen Williams in goal was excellent in qualifying. South Africa haven't been to a World Cup since they hosted it in 2010 — the return to this stage is enormous.

Patrik Schick
Czechia · Striker
Bayer Leverkusen's target man. Goal from the halfway line at Euro 2020 is still in YouTube rotation. South Africa's high defensive line gives him exactly the space he exploits. A fit Schick is Czechia's entire Plan A.
Percy Tau
South Africa · Forward
The Bafana Bafana creative hub. Belgium-based, technically slick, capable of the unexpected. If South Africa are to steal something here, it'll be built on a Tau moment that Koubek's defence didn't plan for.

Schick opener · Soucek late header · South Africa better than the scoreline suggests
Take 01
South Africa are playing their first World Cup since 2010 when they hosted the tournament and drew with Mexico, beat France, and went out on goal difference. The Bafana Bafana supporters who were in Soweto that summer are now in Atlanta, and they've waited 16 years for this. The noise in that stadium will be something else.
Take 02
Czechia are criminally underrated in this group. They're solid, organised, and have Schick — a striker who can decide a match with a single action. Mexico and South Korea get most of the glamour coverage, but Koubek's squad may quietly win Group A. The 18th June noon slot means absolutely nobody's paying attention to this match, which suits Czechia fine.
Take 03
Hugo Broos' decision to build around domestic players is either genius or madness. Against Czechia's organised midfield press, the Sundowns and Pirates contingent will find it difficult — but their cohesion is real. They know exactly what each other is going to do. Tau is the variable. If he has 20 minutes of inspiration, South Africa take a point.

Czechia win this with efficiency rather than beauty — Schick gets his goal, Souček runs everything, South Africa push hard without the cutting edge to threaten Koubek's backline for real. Bafana Bafana are better than they'll be given credit for. Czechia 2–0 South Africa.
