Mbeumo 35' · Calvert-Lewin 51' · Elland Road Wants Blood · Gets A Draw
The Roses Derby at Elland Road had everything a Yorkshire fixture is supposed to have — noise, atmosphere, hostility, and a Manchester United side who had no business being here without a crisis following them. Daniel Farke's Leeds were expected to win. The Couch picked them. Elland Road expected them to. Bryan Mbeumo, cool and precise as ever, had other plans.
Mbeumo scored first for Manchester United at 35', drifting inside and finishing with the composure of a man entirely unaffected by the surroundings. Elland Road went quiet. A visiting team scoring against the run of play at Elland Road in a Roses Derby is one of the few things capable of silencing 36,000 Yorkshire supporters. Mbeumo achieved it.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalized six minutes into the second half at 51', and Elland Road found its voice again — and then some. The stadium sensed a winner. Leeds pressed. United retreated. The noise was extraordinary. But the winner never came. Carrick's side — dysfunctional, inconsistent, thirteenth in the table with seven points from seven games — defended with more discipline than they had any right to show and left Yorkshire with a point.
A point is not enough for either side, but it hurts Leeds more. The Couch picked a Leeds win. The home side were the better team for large periods. They created enough. They just couldn't score a second. Carrick will call this a character-building point. Farke will know it was two points dropped. Manchester United: seven points. Thirteenth. The Carrick question will not go away on the basis of a draw in Yorkshire.
