SWITZERLAND WIN GROUP B
OPERATION DECOY: DAVIES NEVER LEAVES THE BENCH

Switzerland 2 – 1 Canada

📍 BC Place, Vancouver, BC  |  ⚽ Vargas 46', Manzambi 57' (SUI) · David 76' (CAN)

Match Report

A goalless, feel-it-out first half in front of a sold-out 52,497 at BC Place gave way to a completely different match the moment the second half started. Thirty-nine seconds after the restart, Johan Manzambi slipped Ruben Vargas through and the winger finished low to make it 1-0. Manzambi doubled the lead himself in the 57th, and what had been a tense Group B finale turned into a comfortable night's work for Murat Yakin's side inside twelve second-half minutes.

Canada got a goal back through Promise David, on for his customary impact-sub cameo, who buried a superb half-volley in the 76th to set up a nervy final quarter-hour that never quite arrived. Jesse Marsch admitted afterward that he wished he'd switched to a back five at halftime — but the bigger story out of Vancouver was his decision to use a fit-again Alphonso Davies purely as a decoy, naming him in the squad and never once bringing him off the bench, a call that will be relitigated all the way to Los Angeles.

🛋️ The Couch called the scoreline almost to the letter — Switzerland 2-1 Canada was the exact prediction — and then got every single name on the scoresheet wrong, plus an entire substitute's afternoon wrong, inside the same 90 minutes. Embolo and Ndoye never got off the mark; Vargas and Manzambi did the damage instead. That's either a remarkable coincidence or a sign the Couch should spend less time with the depth chart and more time watching actual matches.

Three Things We Learned

1. Switzerland Found Their Gear Exactly When It Mattered

Two goals in twelve second-half minutes turned a nervy group decider into a routine night's work. Yakin's side top Group B playing the tournament's best football of anyone left standing in this section of the draw.

2. Marsch's Davies Gamble Is the Story Nobody Saw Coming

Naming a fit Alphonso Davies and then never using him — deploying him purely as a decoy to occupy Swiss attention before the match — is the kind of call that either ages brilliantly by the round of 32 or haunts a manager for a tournament.

3. Canada's Round-of-32 Address Is Confirmed

Second place in Group B sends Canada to Los Angeles for the knockouts — and buys Davies, still working back from a hamstring injury, an extra week before his coach actually needs him on the pitch.

🛋️ The Armchair Galáctico Predicted
Switzerland 2 – 1 Canada
Dead-on the scoreline, dead wrong on everything inside it. The Couch had Embolo and Ndoye on the scoresheet for Switzerland — instead it was Vargas and Manzambi. The Couch had David scoring Canada's consolation, which actually landed (small mercies) — but also pencilled in "20 minutes for Davies" that never happened. Marsch's captain never left the bench.

Switzerland have won Group B outright. Canada provisionally occupy second by goal difference — but Bosnia, who play Qatar in this matchday's other Group B finale, could still climb level on points and overtake them once that result is in.
