Match Report

Our preview spent two separate alert boxes worrying about Kalidou Koulibaly's fitness and predicting "Koulibaly caught in behind." It didn't take long for the alert box to look prophetic, just in a different shape than expected — in the 43rd minute, mistakes from both Koulibaly and goalkeeper Édouard Mendy at the back let Marcus Pedersen in to open the scoring on a rain-swept night at MetLife Stadium. Norway took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Erling Haaland doubled the lead three minutes into the second half, rifling a finish into the roof of the net in the 48th to make it 2-0 and, in the process, become Norway's all-time leading scorer at the World Cup — his 58th goal for the national team in just his 52nd appearance. Senegal answered through Ismaila Sarr, who finished a clever Sadio Mané flick at the edge of the box in the 53rd to make it 2-1. Haaland had the last word in normal time, restoring the two-goal cushion with a close-range finish in the 58th to make it 3-1. Sarr completed his own brace deep into stoppage time to make the final score respectable at 3-2, but Norway held on for the win.

Norway join France in clinching a Round of 32 spot out of Group I with a matchday to spare. Senegal, who led Group I after Matchday 1, now need a big swing on the final matchday against Iraq just to have a chance of advancing on goal difference.

58 goals for Norway in 52 caps was already absurd. Add "Norway's all-time leading World Cup scorer" to the resume after a brace that arrived almost on schedule — exactly what the preview predicted.

2. The Fitness Alert Box Earned Its Keep

Koulibaly's mistake at the back wasn't the pace issue the preview worried about, but it was still Koulibaly, still a defensive breakdown, and still the goal that started the rout. Sometimes the warning sign just points in a slightly different direction than expected.

3. Senegal's Group I Lead Is Already Gone

Top of the group after Matchday 1, level on points with nobody after Matchday 2. Sarr's brace keeps the goal-difference math alive, barely, but Senegal now need a result against Iraq and a favor from France just to survive.
