UNDAV'S 94TH-MINUTE WINNER SENDS GERMANY THROUGH
GERMANY'S FIRST ROUND OF 32 BERTH SINCE THEIR 2014 TITLE RUN

Germany 2 – 1 Ivory Coast

📍 BMO Field, Toronto  |  ⚽ Kessié ~29' (CIV)  |  ⚽ Undav 68', 90+4' (GER)

Match Report

For most of an hour, this looked like the upset of the tournament so far. Yan Diomande, the 19-year-old already drawing transfer interest from Europe's biggest clubs, worked the byline and squared for Amad Diallo, whose shot was saved by Manuel Neuer — only for Franck Kessié to arrive first on the rebound and finish from close range. Ivory Coast led, and they had every reason to believe it could last: Germany had already seen two goals chalked off before the break, a Pavlovic header ruled out for a foul on the Ivory Coast goalkeeper and a Havertz finish disallowed for an infringement in the buildup. Julian Nagelsmann's side were dominant in possession and starved of luck in front of goal.

The response came from the bench. Nagelsmann's triple change brought on Deniz Undav and Felix Amiri, and within minutes the substitutes had reshaped the match. Undav equalized in the 68th minute, turning home a cross from Amiri to make it 1-1, and suddenly Ivory Coast were holding on rather than holding out. Simon Adingra had the chance to win it back for Faé's side late on but couldn't finish, and that miss proved decisive: deep into stoppage time, Undav struck again, taking a touch to turn before blasting a finish past the Ivory Coast goalkeeper off a pass from Felix Nmecha. 2-1, in the 94th minute, after Ivory Coast had led for over half the match.

The result sends Germany through to the Round of 32 — their first World Cup knockout-stage qualification since their title-winning campaign in 2014 — joining USA and Mexico as group-stage qualifiers with a game still to play. Ivory Coast, who opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over Ecuador, leave Toronto with nothing to show for an hour of genuinely excellent football, but remain well placed to reach their first-ever World Cup knockout stage.

🎟️ Germany Lock Up the Round of 32 Deniz Undav's brace off the bench — equalizer in the 68th, winner in the 94th — completes a come-from-behind win that secures Germany's place in the knockout stage with a matchday still to spare. It's their first Round of 32 (or equivalent) appearance since they won the whole tournament in 2014.

Three Things We Learned

1. Deniz Undav Is Becoming a Pattern, Not a Surprise

Scoring off the bench in consecutive World Cup matches is no longer a feel-good story — it's a tactical weapon. Nagelsmann now has a proven late-game answer most coaches would kill for.

2. Ivory Coast Can Hang With Anyone for an Hour

Leading Germany for over fifty minutes, on merit, after already beating Ecuador in the opener, is no fluke. Faé's young side have the quality to make a first-ever knockout-stage run — the finishing in the final third just needs to catch up to everything else.

3. Germany's Profligacy Almost Cost Them

Two disallowed goals and a goal conceded against the run of play is not the form of a team that should be cruising. They got the result and the ticket through, but the performance was a reminder this Germany side is good, not yet untouchable.

🛋️ The Armchair Galáctico Predicted
Germany 3 – 0 Ivory Coast
Called Wirtz and Musiala as the headline act and Neuer as barely troubled. Got none of that right — Ivory Coast led for most of the match, Germany had two goals chalked off, and the actual hero, Deniz Undav, wasn't even mentioned. Got the winner right; everything else was upside down.
