Scotland needed a win to put one foot in the Round of 32. Instead, they were behind before most of the Tartan Army had found their seats. Ismael Saibari finished from Brahim Díaz's pass just 71 seconds in — the fastest goal of World Cup 2026 so far — after centre-back Grant Hanley's outstretched leg inadvertently played the Moroccan forward onside. There was no way back from there.
Steve Clarke had gone defensive before kickoff, dropping Lawrence Shankland for Kieran Tierney and shifting to a back five. It made no difference to the outcome and barely changed the picture: Scotland never seriously tested Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou across the full 90 minutes. Their best moment of the first half was a stoppage-time Andy Robertson cross that John McGinn couldn't turn into anything.
Morocco, unchanged from their opening-day draw with Brazil under coach Mohamed Ouahbi, threatened to add to their lead throughout. Five minutes into the second half, Saibari met a Bilal El Khannouss cutback and saw his effort deflect off Jack Hendry and onto the bar. Moments later, Angus Gunn produced a smart stop to deny an El Khannouss header from a corner. Morocco were content from there to sit on their lead and soak up what little Scotland could muster — a Ryan Christie effort sailed over after a Scott McTominay assist, and McTominay himself found only the side-netting late on.
The result moves Morocco to four points from two games, primed for the knockout rounds as they chase a repeat of their run to the 2022 semifinals. Scotland drop to three points and must now beat Brazil in Miami on June 24 to keep alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage at a World Cup for the first time ever.
71 seconds in and Scotland were already chasing the game. There's no tactical reshuffle that undoes a start like that.
Steve Clarke shifted to a back five and still conceded inside the opening two minutes, then never laid a glove on Bounou for the remaining 89. The reshuffle changed the shape, not the result.
Mohamed Ouahbi has Morocco unbeaten through two World Cup group games and primed for the knockouts — continuing the momentum many previews still credit to the Walid Regragui era.
