Czechia 1 – 1 South Africa

Match Report

Six minutes. That's all it took for Czechia to do what they couldn't manage in 90 against South Korea. Patrik Schick had already missed a glorious early headed chance — the kind that usually sets the tone for a frustrating afternoon — when Michal Sadílek linked up beautifully with Václav Sojka and steered Czechia into the lead inside six minutes, the fastest goal of the tournament so far.

From there, it looked like the start of the bounce-back Czechia needed after their opening defeat. But South Africa, missing two starters to suspension after a chaotic red-card-strewn loss to Mexico, refused to fold. Hugo Broos's side absorbed pressure, looked dangerous on the break through Percy Tau, and gradually wrestled control of the game's rhythm away from the Czechs.

The equalizer, when it came, was almost inevitable in its unfairness to Czechia. Thapelo Maseko let fly from distance in the 83rd minute; the shot cannoned off the raised arm of Pavel Šulc inside the box, and the referee pointed to the spot without hesitation. Up stepped Teboho Mokoena, ice-cool, to send Ronwen Williams's opposite number the wrong way and level it at 1-1.

Adam Hlozek, fresh off a man-of-the-match-caliber cameo against South Korea, started this one — and while he never quite found the breakthrough moment the preview promised, his pace forced South Africa's makeshift backline into uncomfortable positions all afternoon. It just wasn't enough to keep the three points in Atlanta.

Czechia leave with a point they didn't expect to need and a point South Africa badly needed to get off zero. Group A's bottom two are level. Group A's top two — Mexico and South Korea — are watching this from a very different vantage point entirely.

🟨 Down Two Starters, Up One Point Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane both sat out suspended after red cards against Mexico. South Africa still found a way to leave Atlanta with something. Bafana Bafana's depth chart just got a credibility boost.

Three Things We Learned

1. South Africa Don't Need a Full Squad to Be Stubborn

Two starters suspended, a manager forced into reshuffles, and still Bafana Bafana found a way to leave Atlanta with a point. Hugo Broos's side is proving harder to put away than their Matchday 1 result suggested.

2. Schick's Drought Continues, Sadílek Picks Up the Slack

Patrik Schick is still without a World Cup 2026 goal — he missed a free header here after going quiet entirely against South Korea. Good thing Sadílek didn't need an invitation to step up.

3. The Couch Gets It Wrong

Predicted Czechia 2-0, with Schick and Souček on the scoresheet. Got Czechia 1-1, with Schick missing and Souček not involved at all. The couch correctly noted South Africa were "better than the scoreline suggests" in the preview — and then ignored its own advice when picking the result.

🛋️ The Armchair Galáctico Predicted
Czechia 2 – 0
Called for a Schick-Souček combo and a clean sheet. Got neither — Sadílek scored instead, and a Mokoena penalty wiped out the lead. The couch's own caveat about South Africa came back to bite it.
