Match Report

Switzerland dominated for 89 minutes and created 3.24 expected goals. Qatar had 0.76. And yet, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Qatar captain Boualem Khoukhi powered home a header from an Ahmed assist to earn a draw that felt, in that exact moment, like a win. This is why football is infuriating and magnificent in equal measure.

Breel Embolo — the striker who famously scored against his birth nation Cameroon at the last World Cup — gave Switzerland the lead in the 17th minute from the penalty spot after a foul in the box. Switzerland then proceeded to do exactly what Switzerland do: control the ball, create chances, look entirely in command, and somehow fail to kill the game.

Qatar goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham was excellent — making saves that had no right to be made — and the Swiss grew increasingly frustrated as the second half wore on without a second goal. The 95th minute: Khoukhi met a cross, got his head to it, and Switzerland's 90 minutes of dominance became a single point. Lopetegui punched the air on the touchline. The Maroons' redemption arc — so improbable at kick-off — had taken its first step. Switzerland's players looked at each other with the specific expression of a team that has done this to itself before.
