Come From Behind · Rice Backheel · Guimarães Screamer · Arsenal's Character On Display
Leeds United came to the Emirates with a plan and very nearly made it work. Daniel Farke's side — compact, well-organized, comfortable with sitting deep and hurting Arsenal on the counter — executed their first-half game plan to near-perfection. Arsenal had possession, had the crowd, had the pressure, but couldn't find the opening. Leeds looked comfortable. Then, in the 54th minute, they looked like they might actually win this.
James Justin broke down the right and found a gap in Arsenal's high defensive line. His finish was composed, precise, and deserved. The Emirates went quiet. The visitors celebrated. A team that had come to the Emirates to absorb pressure and counter was now 1–0 up on the second-placed side in the Premier League. This is not supposed to happen.
Arsenal responded through Riccardo Calafiori in the 62nd minute. The Italian centre-back, who has become one of Arteta's most important creative defenders, attacked a cross with conviction and levelled. 1–1. The Emirates found its voice again. Leeds, who had done everything right for an hour, suddenly looked exposed. Arsenal now pressed with the urgency of a team who understood exactly what was at stake.
The goal that settled it was something special. Substitute Bruno Guimarães — on for MLS — had been on the pitch for approximately six minutes when Declan Rice produced a moment of outrageous skill, flicking the ball through on a backheel while surrounded by two Leeds defenders. Guimarães took it first time, shifted onto his right foot, and curled an unstoppable shot from outside the box that evaded the goal-keeper and found the back of the net. 2–1. The Emirates erupted. Leeds were broken.
Arsenal showed something important today. Going a goal down at home to a side they hammered by nil goals to nil in two games last season — these are moments that test a team's character. Arsenal have been accused in previous seasons of wilting under pressure on their own ground. Not this season. Not with this squad. Three points. Fifteen for the season. Three behind City. Arsenal remain the only realistic challengers to Mancheater's juggernaut — whatever the commission's verdict says about how that juggernaut was built.
